Cropped Denim Jacket Size 5X

Domino Dollhouse Plus Size 4X Denim Jacket - Out of Stock

Domino Dollhouse Plus Size 4X Denim Jacket – Out of Stock

Every time I show this black denim cropped jacket, I get questions about where I got it. It is a couple of years old from Domino Dollhouse, and they do not make them anymore. I love it and wear it a lot, in fact I am going to wear it today.

There are lots of denim jackets out there, but very few cropped jackets to a size 5X. So when I saw this denim cropped jacket from Strut Fashion, with a 15% discount code (PLUSMODELMAG2013) from Plus Model Magazine, I thought you needed to hear about it right away.  They have a size chart on each page for each item, I love that.

I would love to hear about it if you have one or buy one, I have not yet tried their clothes.

ModCloth, A New Plus Size Retailer, Size 4X Review

Cherie - Stina - Affinity

Cherie                                                       Stina                                                         Affinity

modclothA new retailer to me, Modcloth was having a great sale, and I had a $15 discount so I was able to buy this dress for less than $20 shipped. It is a burnout fabric. I noticed that 3 of us from our blogging collective, Ahead of the Curve, were buying it so I thought it would be fun if we did a collage, since Cherie lives in Cincinnati, Stina in Toronto and I live in California. They have this dress in turquoise, but not on sale, sorry.

We are all wearing a Size 4X (their largest size), but for me it is way too large in the arms and bust (underarms  27 – 31 stretched, waist 25 stretched 28.5), a 5X could absolutely wear this (although it is sold out, sorry), but is fairly short in the waist for me (not unusual for me). The dress brand is Mood and if I bought this brand again I would size down to a 3X.

ModCloth, carries lots of different brands so I expect that the sizing will vary a lot. If you are interested in trying it HERE is a link for $15 savings, and I get $15 for referring you.

EVANS Black and Gold Plus Size Sequin Bolero Jacket

evans bolero jacketI was checking out The Curvy Fashionista a few weeks ago and she had a “Gotta Have It: This Plus Size Sequins Bolero from Evans” post, and it knocked my socks off. Kind of art deco, small sequined (they are more comfortable) and it is in my size. I had convinced myself it would be too heavy for San Francisco, but now it is marked down to $150, from $230, AND it comes in a UK Size 28. I may yet have to have it…. What say you? Should it be my holiday splurge?

Dare to Wear – A Plus Size Goth, Renaissance, Romantic San Francisco Clothing Company

I got an email from a friend of mine telling me about the local plus size retailer she is working for, Dare to Wear.  They are a local mom and pop retail / wholesaler (yes both) with goth/ renaissance/ romantic style plus size clothing. Everything is made here is San Francisco.

They have several goth/ renassaince/ romantic styles that go up to a size 5X (and here is their Size 5X selection). I love that you can sort the clothes by size. I have not tried them yet, but I wanted to let you know about them because of my friend and because if you love this type of clothing, you know how hard it is to find in plus sizes.

Here is their Size Chart so you can see if it might fit. I think I would probably wear a 5X rather than my usual 4X, but I have not actually tried anything yet.

Update: I just heard from one of my readers:

I love their things and have purchased a few styles. I would say the sizes run at least one size smaller, so order up one size, and if it is form fitting then possibly two. Some of the fabrics are stretchy however.

They will be having sales this weekend so this would be a great time to check them out. I would love to hear from any of you about fit and how you like their clothes.

ASOS Curve Body Con Dress Size 24 – Review

red asos pencil LGAs you know from this review, I have a trial membership to Gwynnie Bee, and if you are interested in checking it out please read more HERE (full disclosure: if you sign up after the trial, I get a free month free).  One of the first dresses I tried was this one, because I love the body con look, but because I am apple shaped I thought it would not be a great look for me, and “renting” the look seemed perfect.

This dress looks great standing up forward, although it could use a little shortening, but both standing sideway and sitting down it is not as forgiving as a fit & flare dress, which is how I usually dress. I am thrilled to have tried it and I would love to hear about your body con adventures.

You can see my measurements HERE if you want to know how this might fit YOU. The Size US 24 was a very comfortable fit for me.

Dress: ASOS Curve, Size 24
Boots: Avenue Size 9.5W, my review is HERE, and they are currently on sale
Glasses: I found these in my jewelry drawer, something similar HERE

12/10/13 Update: The red and black dress above has turned out to be my favorite of the ASOS Curve Body Con dresses I have tried on, and FYI it is on sale right now, HERE. I like the weight of the dress, I like the black panels, I may have to buy it.

asos pencil LGI also tried another ASOS Curve Body Con Dress, which I had been coveting for months, via Gwynnie Bee, and once again I loved it, although it was much longer and would need to be shortened, and because it was a much lighter material, it did not do well with the leggings.

Gwynnie Bee – Netflix for Clothes – A Plus Size Review – 4X Plus

Twelve dresses of the 134 - Size 26 - that are available today

Twelve dresses of the 134 – Size 26 – that are available today

I recently signed up for my free one month trial of Gwynnie Bee. Gwynnie Bee is a monthly subscription service for size 10-32 clothing, yes they go to a size 32. Right now, when I go to the “Dresses” they have 134, Size 26 dresses and 61 size 32 dresses. How cool is that?

You get to shop lots of different brands and you get to keep the clothes as long as you like.

You pay a flat monthly subscription fee for access to the entire collection. For three garments out at a time, the monthly fee is $79. The subscription also covers unlimited free shipping and exchanges.  I LOVE this idea and I LOVE that they are focusing on plus size.

They offer a 30 day free trial period: I love this. Read more about it HERE.

How it Works. You sign up for a plan (between 1 and 10 garments out at a time) and they ship you items from your “closet” (a list of items you choose) to wear for as long as you like. It may feel somewhat similar to Netflix, in that it is a set price, but the HUGE difference is that if you have the “3 at a time plan” you have to have chosen 8 garments, and you cannot specify which of those garments you will get. Gwynnie Bee can send ANY item from your “closet”, not the next ones in your “queue”.

The First Box. Gwynnie Bee shipments come in a super well sealed box and include the clothes along with care instructions, etc. The clothes themselves are labelled clearly so you don’t accidentally wash a dry clean only item and so you can easily find the outfit again on their website. (although you only need to clean it if you want to wear it again, they will clean it when they get it back). The clothes look great and are clean and pressed.

It took my first box 4 days to arrive, but in reading other reviews the timeframe may be shorter or longer than that, and once you have them in rotation it would not be an issue, but Amazon 2 day delivery has spoiled me.  They have VERY responsive customer service, I asked some questions and within several hours I had my answers.

Should You Get It – Should I Get It?  I think if you’re a person who shops regularly, Gwynnie Bee could be AMAZING for you. The most expensive plan is $159 a month but with 10 items out at a time, you could wear something different every time you go out. I can see if I did not like an item I would just return it immediately. And, they have made it REALLY easy to return the items with pre-paid bags. I wanted to try it because I wanted to try several brands of clothing to see how they fit. I am always reluctant to buy something if I do not know anything about fit.

A lot of us will get the smaller package – the 3 items out at a time plan for $79.  I think it is a great deal if you like wearing a variety of clothes, and for many of us, over a year we might spend about that amount, and the variety is endless.

Plus Size. It is SO exciting to have access to such a range of plus sizes and brands.  In my first box I tried Mynt 1792, which goes up to a size 4X, An ASOS Curve sequin pencil skirt that I did not think would work, so I never would have bought it, and a Style & Co 3X shift dress that I would not expect to work but looks okay  (reviews to come).

This sort of rental service has existed for a long time in smaller sizes, I am thrilled that we now have all these choices. AND, it you like some variety, it can be fun. Give it a try, you will be glad you did!

A tip for increasing to odds of getting the item you want:
If you subscribe to three pieces of clothing, they require that you have 8 or 10 pieces of clothing that you have requested (your wish list) before they will send you any pieces of clothing. If you keep your wish list to the required minimum (as opposed to 20 items on your wish list at any time), your odds of receiving what you actually want increase. BUT, it will slow down the process of them sending you something because you have given them fewer options to chose from. A conundrum.

May 2014 Update: I gave up my subscription because I am not working anymore I did not need this variety of clothes. The clothes are occasionally delayed, but if you keep more items in “your closet” they have more options of what to send you. Have Fun!

October 1, 2014 Update: They no longer offer the free one month trial.

The Plus Size 4X Cartoon Skirt is Everywhere

cartoon skirt leori

I just had to have this Cartoon Circle Skirt from New Look.  The one they are selling now is a little different print and if you Google “plus size cartoon skirt” you get a range of choices. This is a U.K. Size 28, which is about at U.S. Size 26. The material is quite thick, perhaps more appropriate for fall, and as you can see, it is short, partially because I really am a size U.S. 28 and I take up some of the material, so it is even shorter than usual.  But I am amused by it and happy to have it, and I am sure I will wear it. I think it would look better with boots.

new look cartoon skater skirt PMBelt: Torrid 5x, elastic, way too large, I had to cut it and make smaller with a seam in the back. That is the first time I can remember that happening with Torrid.

Vintage Dr. Martens

doc martensI have a friend Nancy Frank Radin, you met her here, and guess what, she does not buy retail.  This photo is of her 1980 vintage Dr. Martens.  How cool are those?  I have always had a point of view that I can’t buy vintage because it does not come in my size, and that I have to buy retail, but Nancy is proving me wrong.  Maybe it is time to try a consignment store or two.

I would love to know what your experience has been with all alternative forms of shopping: thrift stores, Facebook sites, online consignment, Goodwill.  Tell me how to do it.

Thanks Nancy, for making me think about things in a different way.

Update: May 15, 2013: Nancy’s comments: I love the look of those black and white shoes,  so graphic and comfortable yeah even good wheels and Goodwill’s have plus size racks now it’s great to repurpose and recycle clothing.

Styling a Plus Size Maxi Dress or the DIY Plus Size Statement Necklace

Affinity & April Photo: James Saint James Pell

Affinity & April Photo: James Saint James Pell

On Saturday night my friends hosted a table at the Crucible’s Fire & Light Soiree and Art Auction and were sweet enough to include me. As you can see, I dressed up a black dress with a fascinator I purchased in a little shop down the street and a lot of jewelry that I  upcycled.

Our friend, Dennis Bartels, the Executive Director of the Exploratorium, was being honored for his enthusiastic support of the art community so I wanted to dress up, and I knew it was an opportunity to be a little over the top since it is a pretty arty crowd.

I love this photo of Suzi Bartels and I, it was so fun to spend a little time with her.

maxi dress YC LGYours Clothing sent me the black maxi dress.  It is a UK size 30-32 or a US size 26-28 and I am quite sure a US size 30-32 could wear it. It is a light jersey, very easy to wear, the armholes run fairly large and since I am 5″5″ tall, I had to shorten it a little. It is difficult to see but there is a twisted front that is a nice detail in the torso area.  It was a great piece to accessorize and I loved that I was so comfortable and I thought the dress looked very elegant.

Here are the close ups of the jewelry, mostly made from vintage or thrift store finds (on Etsy) or left-overs in my jewelry box. A tutorial to come, I promise.

It was a fabulous fun filled evening and I loved being a little outrageous in my style, and have a vision for making the look a little more who I am.

Review of Plus Size Flirty Mini from Yours Clothing

good Yours Clothing polka dot LGSince my sweetie and I bought a condo in Oakland, CA, last month I have been catching up with my friends that live on this side of the Bay and going out to lunch or a movie whenever I can.  This flirty polka dot mini dress, with leggings, is my new go-to outfit.  Yours Clothing was kind enough to send it to me to be reviewed. It is a UK Size 26 – 28 which would be a US size 22 – 24, and it is a great fit. I also love this black version with a print, which I might just have to have for the warm weather to come.  It looks fun, and it is very lightweight which is great since Oakland weather is about 10 degrees warmer than San Francisco.

I have been wearing this dress with neon pink fishnet tights from We Love Color, which come in 51 colors, and these are Plus Size “One Size” Size 1X – 3X and they fit perfectly, but I think I am at the top of their range, since I am a size 26-28, the size chart says hips to 48 inches and mine are well over 50″, they are also not very long.  I think the fishnets would also be fun with black stockings underneath them, to match the polka dot color even more, but it would have to be a pretty cold day to make that comfortable.

The silver shoes are a Size 10 from Torrid and I would love to have 10 pair of them.  They are my favorites, and I seem to have bought the last pair in the world.  And the silver belt was a gift from a friend.IMG_2783I also tried the dress with cropped tights and little black flats since it was really warm one day, but I think it looks better with long tights whether they are pink or black.

Screen Shot 2013-05-03 at 6.37.38 AM5/32013 Update:  One of my readers suggested the pink tights needed a pop of pink at the top of my body, perhaps a scarf, and I agreed.  But I am not really a scarf girl so I bought some vintage 1980s big button clip on earrings which are totally tubular for less than $10 including shipping.  We will see if that does the trick.
