Fun Wide-Legged Pants for Plus Sizes!

in full swingI met Sharon Silverstein, owner of In Full Swing, in 1989, while I was shopping. She was a delight, and we became friends. Here we are 25 years later and I am still shopping with her, now in Oakland, CA.

When I saw these pants, I just had to have them. If you have been following along, you know I love both words and graffiti and these pants have a little of both. They only came to a size 3X, but they are 92% polyester and 8% spandex, so they have lots of stretch, and I would be comfortable suggesting them to anyone who wears a 4X or Size 26/28. And you know these wide legged pants are all the rage this summer.

crop for beltI love a little DIY (do it yourself project). A friend gave me two belts like the one I have on in the photo, size 4X stretch belts, but both with gold snaps. I decided I HAD to have silver, so I silver-leafed them. What was I thinking? The first time I wore the belt, and leaned against a table, the silver leaf started peeling. Using the wrong materials will get you every time. I should have used a silver Sharpie. LOL

We stopped by the de Young Museum the other night because our friend Sean Orlando was having a closing reception of his show.

I turned, and there was this fabulous woman dressed to kill.

bondeA jacket from Torrid in mixed faux leather, with a pair of pleather pants.

She looked amazing, but the pièce de résistance was a fabulous pair of lace up Fluevog boots. Could I wear them? Might they fit in width if I got a size 10 for my usually size 9.5 foot? And they lace up so the calf size should not be a problem. I may just have to check them out. This is what Fluevog says about them:
Go on, fall in love. We dare you!”

bonde ringIn addition to looking stunning, it turns out that she is a jeweler, and her friend had an engagement ring on that Bonnie had designed for her. Her business is called Bonde Jewelry, check her out sometime.

OMG, Hell Bunny 2X – 4X on Sale: AND Buy One – Get One for $1

I have not shopped at Hot Topic in years, BUT I saw someone post a Hell Bunny dress that they had gotten from them. When I went to check it out, most of them were on sale AND, SOME OF THEM ARE, Buy One Get One for $1. OMG!

Hell Bunny Plus Size usually cost about $90.00 apiece, at Amazon, for example.

Hell Bunny runs a little small in the waist for me, since I am an apple shape, but I just bought one from a friend that I know is going to fit because it has elastic all across the back, and I am going to look for other styles that are similar.

Although not my favorite print, I can see from the “bacK” photo that this one has an elastic panel in the back, that may make it my first choice.

Hot Topic also has some great graphic tanks to a 3X, but probably too small for me.

Buena Chica ‘Brings it’ from Ross!

Alix Tre´ aka Buena Chica

Alix Tre´ aka Buena Chica

A couple of week ago I was at an event with the fabulous Alix Tre´ and I was standing behind her and noticed that the back of her t-shirt was “cut”, so I asked if she had done it herself, since I am kind of a DIY girl myself. She responded that “oh no, the t-shirt was like that when she got it from Ross, Dress For Less.

alix2And then she turned around, and her t-shirt said LOVE. Well you know that I am a child of the 60’s and it made me smile. And the she told me she had only paid $5 for the t-shirt.

There are bargains out there to be had. We just have to keep shopping.

My Summer Wardrobe in a 4X at Kmart!

A couple of years ago I bought a summer dress at Kmart that I am still wearing and loving. I thought it might be interesting to see what kind of summer wardrobe I could put together if I were shopping at Kmart this summer, still wearing a Size 4X. Here is some of what I found.

Black Tropical Capris (All 4X) Black Tank Top Gray Crewneck Tshirt Black

Black Tropical Capris                                                     Black Lace Trim Tank Top
Gray Crewneck T-shirt                                                    Black V-Neck Tee

The first outfit I found was a great pair of tropical print capris and three shirts that could be worn with them. There were of course a variety of others.

Palm Frond Earrings Torrid Necklace Bangle Bracelets Palm Frond Brooch

Palm Frond Earrings                                                                       Torrid Necklace
Bangle Bracelets                                                                             Palm Frond Brooch

And just to make the outfit a little more fun here is some inexpensive jewelry to dress it up. I would not think of going out in public without a bangle bracelet and earrings these days.

Navy Striped Top Mixed Blues Floral Top Navy Capris Blue Blus Lace Tank Top

Navy Striped Top                                                       Mixed Blues Floral  Top
Navy Capris                              Blue Tropical Tee                                 Floral Lace Tank Top

Then I found some basic navy capris, with several choices of tops that had some navy in them.

And then for the pièce de résistance, they had JAMMIES. Jammies with shorts, jammies with capris and even nightgowns. But whatever color you could want.

I was quite pleased at how inexpensively I could put together and fun and versatile summer wardrobe. If I needed a more conservative wardrobe, they had long pants and button down shirts that would be sufficient for most casual day work.

I Am Loving ASOS Curve Salon

asos curve salonI love ASOS Curve. I love that they are trendy. I love that their sizes run large, and I can wear many of their US Size 22s and almost all of their US Size 24 clothes. AND they have great sales. They are at the top of my “go to list” for clothes.

And YAY, they are creating a more upscale look in their summer 2014 collection, ASOS Curve Salon.

On my list for summer is the easy fit and flare print with the white inserts. I do not always buy new trends but I like this one a lot. And who does not need a beautiful embellished dress?

asoscurve salon sale collageBut I have also loved the three Salon dresses that are on sale, which are on the same page for ASOS Curve Salon. Some of the sizes are sold out, but they are worth checking out, in my humble opinion.

UPDATE: 6/21/2014 ASOS had a fire and stopped taking orders until the damage could be assessed. Hopefully there will not be too much damage.

The party was at a venue I had been dying to go to, The Battery, and since the Birthday Girl was a Burning Man campmate, we got to see various iterations of different years of campmates from many different years of Burning Man. A glorious evening. That is a kiss on MonkeyBoy’s face, I had kisses on my skirt and top so I handed out sticker kisses. Such a fun evening. Thanks to my friends for creating this moment.

Emerald Wearing eShakti Plus Size at Burning Man Headquarters

Emerald wearing eShakti - Customized

Emerald wearing eShakti Customized

My friend Emerald, who works at Burning Man Headquarters, asked me about my blog a few months ago, and then perused it. She then told me she had ordered from eShakti, here is her story:

With a Burning Man identity of “Emerald” and finding myself blessed with a job at the headquarters in San Francisco I decided to splurge on a dress.   It turned out not to be quite a splurge as this dress was on sale and I had a first-time-buyer discount.  I paid a total of $23.90.

Here are the measurements I provided to eShakti:

  • Lengthofarm:Short
  • Upperarm:15
  • Hip:55
  • Waist:45
  • Underbust:41
  • Bust:45
  • Chest:44
  • Shoulder:17
  • I’m 5 feet tall and weigh ~210.
I get a lot of compliments on this outfit.  It’s comfortable and fun to wear.   The only measurement I have a problem with is shoulder-to-shoulder and I need to go back and re-measure myself.  The dress crosses from front to back too close to my shoulder and you can’t pull it in because of the design.   I wear a blouse under it (most of the time anyway) as it is cut lower than I would wear it during the day.
Overall I am thrilled to get a dress cut to size that I really enjoy.

Thanks Emerald for taking the time to share with us how eShakti worked for you and you look fabulous in your dress.

When our blogging collective Ahead of the Curve decided on the subject of Plus Size Thrifting I was concerned because I had just written a post a few weeks ago about thrifting, and here was the subject coming up again. But, since my husband and I just retired a couple of years ago, and I still want to be able to spend money on clothes, I set out to find a bargain I liked enough to blog about.

Alberto Makali Size 4X Pleated Shirt from Ebay $30 including shipping (Although a 3X because of the pleating, I thought it might fit)

(Although a 3X, because of the pleating, I thought it might fit, and it did!)

After the dress, I wanted something to dress it up, so I found this Alberto Makali pleated Shirt on ebay.

But then I wanted to find something I already had in my jewelry box. So it seemed like a “Do It Yourself” bracelet, and a gifted pendant that I had never worn would be great choices. And even the elastic belt was a gift that arrived in the package with the dress, although I had not purchased it.

I had a lot of fun with this challenge. Click HERE for some thrifting tips from the Curvy Fashionista.

When I was researching thrifting I came across this lovely quote.
