Yep, it’s Burning Man Season

I leave in two days for Burning Man.  My husband has been there for a month helping to build the infrastructure for the event.  There will be about 60,000 people this year.  If you want to follow my blogging about Burning Man now and then, check here.  My friend Jennifer Raiser and I have a new tradition of doing something together to get ready to go.  Jennifer is also a blogger but in the big time, The Huffington Post, and SF Wire.  But mostly we are simpatico, we just “get” each other.  This year we decided to do sparkly mani/pedis at Wild Orchid Salon, a luxe downtown salon in San Francisco.  You cannot really tell but Jennifer has a “skull” on her big toe, and I have some purple flames under that glitter on a couple of nails.  I promise to bring a better camera next time.  We had a great time and you get to see the results.

Two years ago we did henna.  Fun but I just did not quite get in the swing of it, but thought you might enjoy seeing our photos.

I don’t know what kind of connectivity I will have from Burning Man but I wil try to show you some fun clothes and a taste of the event from my point of view.  I will catch up with you upon my return if I can’t blog from – out there in the desert.  Ciao Bellas…affinity

Lane Bryant Socks aka Anklets – A Review

Well I don’t know about you but I am always looking for something sockish to wear with flats and a skirt or jeans, that are not trouser socks or knee highs, which I can barely find in my size and do not stay up anyway.  You know, kind of the new take on bobby socks and sneakers.  Today my “anklets” arrived from Lane Bryant, on sale for $3.99 for 2 pair and fun and quirky, and guess what, they are a great fit.  I wear a 10WW so finding fun socks is difficult and I am thrilled with these.  Lane Bryant also carries standard but fun printed socks that I expect may fit similarly, but I cannot guarantee that.  I love the pink houndstooth, a couple of leopard choices and some polka dots.  But I am in love with my new anklets and I bet you will be seeing them around. So if you are feeling sockish check them out.  Ciao Bellas…affinity

Update: 9/12/2012  Did you see this video with Beyonce wearing high heels and  socks, all the cool girls are doing it?

Update November 13, 2012:  Love this photo, it made my day.

Annalogy – Gorgeous Clothes to a Size 5X

I stopped by the the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance Convention in San Mateo a couple of weeks ago to see my friends and to checkout the trunk show from the plus size clothing stores, who often carry clothes 4X and larger.  And there I found my long time friend Marilyn Wann, a force for good in the fat acceptance world.  She is even in Wikipedia, gotta love that.  I asked her what she was wearing this year and she could not say enough good things about Annalogy, They carry sizes to a 5X, which is a size 30-32.  I love their styling I can see a sophisticated business woman wearing some of the looks and yet some of the other pieces are very versatile and could fit in any wardrobe.

Here is what my friend Marilyn had to say:

Yes! I was squeaking with delight! I *LOVE* *LOVE* *LOVE* Annalogy’s Anna Roberson’s fashion sense! She uses fabrics that are modal (a kind of super-soft rayon) with a bit of spandex. My total favorite fabric! And she styles them into exactly the kinds of garments that are going to let me live the fantasy of wearing modal every day and feeling like I’m in a cozy bed all the time! Squeak of delight!!!

My friends met me at the trunk show and we then ended up dancing in the hall with two of my prior aerobics teachers, Deb Burgard from the 1980s and the Cinder Ernst from the 90s and the 2000s (is that how you think I should express the period of 2000-2010?) and my good friend Carol Squires.  It was old home week, a combination of two teachers that have been very important to me and a friend I do not see very often, but danced with for years, and the delight of dancing to songs that I know so well my body was just thrilled.  Just SO much fun!    Ciao Bellas…affinity

Wide High Top Sneakers – T.U.K.

I love shoes and I love a little edge.  But I have a wide foot and as most of you know that is often limiting.  So I heard that someone with a widish foot was buying some T.U.K.s and I had to check it out.  And then I found these, purple and pink but with white zebra, but just TOO much white. They were on sale for $25 and the description said that they ran large and you should order a smaller size.  So I ordered a 9, I wear a 9.5 and they fit perfectly.  Plenty of room for my wide feet and lots of cushion.  And then I used a fabric ink pen to make the white zebra into lavender zebra.  I am thrilled.

They also have a mix tape version for $20 and a black version (but not in very many sizes). I do not know that other TUK sneakers would fit me. This may be an anomaly and that is why they are so cheap, but I am thrilled. Ciao Bellas…affinity

UPDATE: I wore these for the second time last night and I doubt I will buy high tops again.  The extra leather around my ankle just feels like too much. Lesson learned, next time regular sneakers, but with wild colors or print if possible.

UPDATE:  I looked on the inter webs and of course was rewarded with some suggestions with how to wear them so here are a couple of links:

Affinity Means “Kindred” in Sanskrit

I have had very little time in my life when I have not had any responsibility, one maybe two jobs while attending law school, working lots of hours or even more recently volunteering for the Burning Man Project.  It has been interesting.  I made a silly mistake recently and my goal has been to not beat myself up too much and enjoy each day as it comes.  So this morning I woke up with NO plans.  My husband is already at Burning Man helping to build the city.  And then, it just popped into my head, I think I will get a tattoo today. I spent a couple of hours thinking about design and then creating a template for the tattoo artist to use.  It is Sanskrit and it means “affinity” with a more literal translation of “kindred”. A friend suggested the Black and Blue Tattoo shop and the artist, Matt was very kind. It barely hurt, just little pin pricks until the last 5 minutes and then it got a little uncomfortable, it took about 1/2 hour.  It is my first tattoo, I have wanted one for a long time and it was an exciting adventure to go on all by myself, without even discussing it with anyone.  Ciao Bellas…affinity

Plus Size Salwar Kameez

My long time friend, Sue Bishop also goes to Burning Man.  So this year she thought she might try wearing a salwar kameez or three.  What is a salwar kameez you ask?

Salwar Kameez is (also spelt shalwar kameez or shalwar qameez) (Hindi: सलवार कमीज, Urdu: شلوار قمیض)? It is the dress worn by both women and men in northern South Asia and Central Asia. It is a unisex dress similar in manner to shirt and pants worn by both women and men in the west, per Wikipedia.

I think of them as Indian and would not have thought they were worn in other countries, but that may well be the case.  So Sue went shopping, and here is what she found.

Sue started her shopping in Berkeley, the two salwar kemeezes above were purchased there, and this is what she had to say about the experience.
The Berkeley shop is Roopam Saris, 1044 University.  Yelp has a lot of negative reviews based on customer service but, even though I wasn’t shopping their high end merchandise, I was treated very well.  The daughter who helped me volunteered to ask her father for a further discount on a sale item that I bought (the gold and red one).  Here the largest size was 52 (bust measurement).  The 52 in the casual (poly) suit was too big for me.  The 52 in the “party” suit I bought (the blue suit) is a nice loose right.  My bust measurement is 44, so a 50 should be about right for a loose fitting top.  However, the gold and red, which is a 50, needed a few more inches which I added.  Many are sold as sleeveless with short sleeves included that can be sewn on, as I did with the gold one.  The pants are of nearly infinite size.  I looked at Saree Palace nearby which, while very large, has a limited number of 48-52s.

Sue then tried shopping online, and here are her comments about that:
My best recommendation is 786shop.com.  They have an enormous selection and they strongly recommend that every customer have their pieces made to fit at no extra cost.  The suit I ordered was made to my exact measurements.  They have a very thorough custom measurements page.  I wanted a loose fitting garment so I added an inch or two at the bust and hips and got a great fit.  I could choose sleeve length, pants type and overall fit.  My choice was from the Designer Cotton Lawn collection and was one of the most expensive at $117.  Many in this collection are made using pre-printed panels so they have a maximum width of 52 inches.  I don’t think most of the other styles have this limitation. There are cotton lawn options in their casual collection that cost under $50.
I was nervous about buying from a Pakistani website but I followed it for year and saw that it was looking more and more like a mature business.  The functionality on the site is pretty good and they responded promptly to emails and delivered the finished suit as promised.
I love all three  and may yet try to order one online in the future, but certainly not this year since Burning Man is in less than 10 days.  Thanks so much Sue for sharing your research and beautiful clothes with us.  Ciao Bellas…affinity

Sequins and Fire

I bought this dress because I love the tiny sequins, they feel so much more secure than to larger ones.  But it does not really wow me when I wear it.  It is only a 3X and I really wear a 4X, but it is big in the shoulders or the neck, or maybe it is the sheath shape.  But since I was going to a funky-fun attire sort of evening at The Crucible I thought I would take it out for a spin, and I got a lot of compliments on it. I am 5’5″ and weigh exactly 275 lbs. (per the Doctor’s scale last Monday) and the leggings would not fit anyone larger than I am that is an apple shape. I wanted to show you  a close up of the bracelets since I am wearing them almost daily. Some of the bangle bracelets from Torrid do not fit over my big hands but these did and they amuse me. ( I did not wear the boots, at the last minute I changed into little black flats ;D)  Ciao Bellas…affinity

Dress: DKNYC Size 3X – Macys
Silver Leggings: Figuresque  – Queen Size up to 275 lbs
Bracelets: Torrid – Mashup of 2 sets
Boots: Avenue Size 9.5W
I thought you might like to see a little more about the event so I have added some photos.

And this last photo is part of the entertainment for the evening: This is a Tesla Coil and Omega Recoil, the man in the fireproof/electricproof suit is lighting a lightening bolt on fire. Quite Amazing
